Our lives are all wrong. A person has no need of society, it is society that needs him. Society is a defence mechanism, a form of self-protection. Unlike a gregarious animal, a person must live in isolation, close to nature, to animals and plants, and be in contact with them. I can see more and more clearly that it is essential to change our way of life, to revise it. We have to start living differently. But how? First of all we have to feel free and independent, to believe and love; we have to reject this insignificant world and live for something else.

You have to watch this film simply, and listen to the music of Bach and the poems of Arseny Tarkovsky; watch it as one watches the stars, or the sea, as one admires a landscape. There is no mathematical logic here, for it cannot explain what man is or what is the meaning of his life.

In memory of

Jeder Künstler ist bestrebt, das Innenleben des Menschen so überzeugend wie möglich darzustellen. Danach streben wir alle. Ich habe entdeckt, dass ich mich all die Jahre mit ein und demselben Thema beschäftigt habe. Und im Grunde interessieren mich immer die gleichen Probleme. Obwohl ich verschiedene Filme gemacht habe, sind sie alle doch aus einem Grund entstanden. Vom inneren Zwiespalt des Menschen zu berichten. Von seiner widersprüchlichen Situation zwischen Geist und Materie, zwischen geistigen Idealen und der Notwendigkeit in der materiellen Welt zu bestehen. Dieser Zwiespalt ist für mich deshalb äußerst wichtig, weil aus ihm alle Probleme erwachsen, die wir im Verlauf unseres Lebens haben.
